South America

Europe

Native to South America, the pudu is the world’s smallest deer species. There are actually two species of pudu: northern pudu is found in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela, while southern pudu is rarer and found only in southern Chile and southwestern Argentina.

A full-grown pudu only stands about 12 to 18 inches tall, and a newborn fawn weighs less than three pounds at birth. Little is known about their daily lives in the temperate rainforests, as the species is endangered and somewhat secretive. But scientists do know that despite their size, the pudu is skilled at jumping, climbing, and sprinting. Also, they bark when they are scared.
