Question: The diagonal of the floor is 5 m. The shorter side of the room is 3 m. What is the floor area of the room?

Answer: Length = l
width = w = 3m

d=(l^2 + w^2)^0.5
5=(l^2 + 3^2)^0.5

square both sides to remove ^0.5

5^2 = [(l^2+9)^0.5]^2
25 = l^2 + 9

transpose

l^2 = 25 – 9
l^2 = 16
l = 4m

area = l x w = 4 x 3 = 12 m
