Newt the Gnu was an early mascot for what popular breakfast cereal?

Rice Krispies

Frosted Flakes

Golden Grahams

Cocoa Puffs

Today, most people know Tony the Tiger as the mascot for Frosted Flakes, but when he debuted in 1952 he was only one of four potential Frosted Flakes spokes-animals. This colorful menagerie consisted of Tony, Katy the Kangaroo, Elmo the Elephant, and Newt the Gnu.

At the time, the cereal was known as Kellogg’s Sugar Frosted Flakes of Corn, and Newt was depicted blowing a horn to herald the arrival of a “golden, tempting breakfast treat.” When Tony quickly proved the most popular mascot with consumers, however, the other characters were dropped. (And if you’re wondering, “gnu” is another name for wildebeest, a type of large African antelope – and the “g” is silent.)
