However, given that the logic and time of the tense is in the past, it is safe to assume that the question pertains to the money you had originally before you received external money from someone else.
Therefore, you had 3 dollars and another 5 dollars originally with you, which sums up to 8 dollars.

No, it is asking how much money did he have, that means before any relati e Gabe him any money at all. He had $3.00 and a little further on it says he had $5.00 more. So the answer is $8.00. He originally had $8.00 before anyone gave him any extra money. When you read the entire question before you start adding, you can see the question is phrased funny. Why now just say in the question that he had $8.00, when you see a riddle phrased funny, you can bet the answer has something if not everything to do with the way it is phrased.

There have to be at least a couple of assumptions here in order for ANY answer to be valid. If I make the same assumption(s) that the questioner did, then my answer will be same as his. If I make different assumption(s), my answer will be different from his, but still correct according to my assumptions. This is as much, or more, of am English grammar question as it is a “math”. What would an English experts take be on this?
How on earth do you assume that another means multiply?? And even if it did multiply by what? It doesn’t say that so you’re just choosing 2 out of thin air. If he has 3 dollars and then has another 5 dollars….you ADD 5 and 3. Like if I had 3 dollars and then found 5 I would say oh look I found another 5 dollars, and it wouldn’t mean that I already had 5 dollars….it just means that it’s more dollars than what was there to begin with.
