  1. On November 6, 1869, Rutgers University and its neighbor The College of New Jersey (now Princeton) hit the field for a monumental match: the nation’s first intercollegiate football game. The two colleges, situated just 20 miles apart at the time, were intense rivals. The inaugural Rutgers versus Princeton game looked nothing like college football today. Each team had 25 players on the field (compared to present-day 11 players), and they scored by kicking the ball in their opponent’s goal. Carrying or throwing the ball was against the rules, but players could bat the ball around with their heads, limbs, and sides. Each game had 10 mini-games within it; when a team scored, they earned one point and the game transitioned to the next round. Rutgers was victorious, with a six-to-four lead.
